Belgium’s most known cities are: Bruges, Ghent, Brussels, and Antwerp. There are a lot of other nice cities in Belgium, but you can see them in a day or two. These cities are often close to nature and not far from each other. If you want serenity, these are a better option.
Bruges
Medieval – Romantic – Touristy
It’s Belgium’s most beautiful city. It is a bit colonised by tourists and a place that locals avoid, but I feel like the town is so beautiful that you don’t notice it that much.
There are a lot of other small cities near Bruges, with better options to eat and stay. It’s not like there are no nice places in Bruges, but they’re expensive.
And overall, West-Flanders is a beautiful province, you’re not going to end up in an ugly place.

Ghent
Medieval – Vibrant – Headstrong
Ghent is a bit like Bruges but more lively. There are just some modern bits that you find in all cities. Due to these modern parts, you won’t feel as immersed in the medieval ages, but they make the city feel more alive. In Bruges there is almost nothing bringing you back to the real world.

Brussels
Pompous – Charming – Elitist
It is Belgium’s most known city. Mostly because of the politics (EU and the NATO) and because of the sprouts.
If you like wealthy people pretending to be poor, it is the place for you. There are a lot of expats living there which makes it easier for tourists to blend in.
I would say it’s the town with the most buzz as well. I think it’s a city that is both pompous and charming at the same time.

Antwerp
Dramatic – Trendy – Flamboyant
The people of Antwerp are called the most arrogant people of them all. And they are indeed a special breed. Somehow, they are more fun when they act arrogant than when they pretend to be modest.
Antwerp was a very big city in the 15th century, but then its economy collapsed. In their minds they are still the greatest city in the world. Only in Belgium they are still the biggest city.
It is a bit unique in the world that a city collapsed in such little time. They were the place to be and then came the Spanish fury and then they were nothing. I feel like the buildings there are still standing strong for when they will be the greatest again.
